Simple carbohydrates

Simple carbohydrates (sugars) are carbohydrates consisting of 1 or 2 saccharide units. Dietary sugars are:

  • Glucose (monosaccharide, also serves as a basic energy unit for the body) – fruit, honey
  • Fructose (monosaccharide) – vegetables, fruits, honey
  • Sucrose (disaccharide) – sugar cane and sugar beet. This is sugar in the sense of the word we are used to (sugar for sweetening)
  • Maltose (disaccharide) – sprouts
  • Lactose (disaccharide) – milk
